Love is a Jealous, Unquenchable Fire

Love is a Jealous, Unquenchable Fire

Introduction

Revelation 19:11-16 ESV  Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war.  (12)  His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself.  (13)  He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God.  (14)  And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses.  (15)  From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.  (16)  On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.

  • Church… I hope you know this… but…
    • JESUS IS COMING BACK!
    • HE IS COMING BACK!
      • And I don’t know the day and I don’t know the hour, but it’s going to happen.
  • It is a major theme of both testements and the main theme of the book of Revelation.
    • We are all going to see it… like a flash of lightning… riding from the clouds…
    • JESUS IS COMING BACK
    • Every tongue will confess every knee will bow..
    • JESUS IS COMING BACK.
  • But I don’t want to focus on the FACT that Jesus is coming back…
    • If you have been with us for any amount of time in the book of Revelation, I hope you understand that fact, that Jesus is coming back…
    • But today, instead of focusing on the FACT that Jesus is coming back, I want to focus on the manner of which Jesus is coming back.
    • We understand the what… Jesus is coming back.
    • Let’s focus on the how… how is He coming back, in what manner, in what fashion, in what way is Jesus coming back?
  • So let me just present the facts, a great charismatic Theologian, Finis Dake, compiled a brief list of the facts of the second coming of Christ as follows:
  • Now the rapture at this point has already happened, shortly before this.
    • After we are raptured or raised from the dead, we join with Christ in the marriage supper of the Lamb… our wedding feast…
    • And after that celebration, we all mount up on heavenly white horses and come down from the clouds, following Jesus!
  • And think about these facts for a minute… think about these verses…
    • Jesus is coming with eyes of fire.
    • A sword from His mouth.
    • Making war with the nations.
    • Treading out the winepress of God’s wrath.
  • You know what we don’t seem to see in these verses?
    • We don’t seem to see God’s grace…
    • We don’t seem to see God’s love…
      • IT ALL SEEMS A LITTLE HARSH.
  • I was talking to a youth in our youth group who has a Bible teacher at their private school who is a pacifist.
    • And this pacifist teacher is trying to twist scripture to make it sound like “Well God really didn’t want Israel kill all the inhabitants of Canaan… It’s all a misunderstanding”…
      • NONSENSE. GOD COMANDED THE ISREALITES TO KILL THE INHABITANTS OF CANAAN. IN CLEAR LANGUAGE. MULTIPLE TIMES. AND HE PUNISHED THEM WHEN THEY FAILED TO DO SO… BECAUSE THE INHABITANTS OF CANAAN WERE WICKED. THEY WERE EVIL. THEY WERE COOPERATING WITH DEMONS AND THE NEPHEILUM WHICH ARE DEMON SPAWN.
    • And I wonder what a Pacifist does with the second coming of Christ… the Language is clear…
      • Sword.
      • Fire.
      • Winepress of Wrath.
      • War
      • Judgment.
    • How do you twist that scripture, pacifists? IT IS CLEAR.
  • But this provides a challenge for us… WHERE IS GRACE IN ALL OF THIS? WHERE IS LOVE?
    • LET ME TELL YOU WHERE GRACE IS…
      • GRACE RIDING A WHITE HORSE RIDING DOWN FROM HEAVEN MAKING WAR ON THE NATIONS.
        • Because Jesus is Grace and Grace has a ROAR!
    • LET ME TELL YOU WHERE LOVE IS…
      • Love is right there in the clouds, with fire in His eyes and a sword in His mouth, treading out the winepress of God’s wrath.
      • Because Jesus is Love, and Love is a Jealous and consuming fire that can not be quenched.
  • In fact that is the title of Today’s sermon… Love is a Jealous Unquenchable Fire!
  • Love is a Jealous Unquenchable Fire!
  • And the title of this sermon comes from a passage in the Song of Solomon.
    • Now the Song of Solomon is about a man and his wife and their intimate relationship.
    • It is about a real man and a real woman, it is not SPECIFICALLY about Jesus and the church.
      • That said, because Marriage is a forest of our relationship with Christ…
      • Because the institution of marriage is a symbol of our eternal relationship with King Jesus…
        • I think it is safe to make some strong comparisons… to gather some deep insight about how Jesus loves His bride… the Church.
  • So the Title of Today’s sermon doesn’t come from Revelation 19, but instead comes from Song of Solomon chapter 8.

Song of Solomon 8:6-7 ESV  Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy is fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the LORD.  (7)  Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised.

  • Now in case you did not catch the POWER of this passage, let me read it again in the King James version… sometimes you just need to use the king’s English to get the point across.

Song of Solomon 8:6-7 KJV  Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.  (7)  Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.

  • You see Love is the Jealous and unquenchable fire… it spreads, it consumes, it burns!
    • And if you have ever heard a forest fire, you know that like a Lion, that fire has a ROAR.
  • So when we talk about the second coming of Christ we are talking about a side of Jesus does not get talked about enough…
    • So often we think of Jesus as the Humble Servant, washing the dirty feet of His dispilces…
      • And He certainly was and is that Humble Servant.
    • So often when we think of Jesus we think of the comfort and tender kindness He offers.
      • And He certainly comforts us to this day!
    • So often when we think of Jesus we think of the healer who even would heal on the Sabath.
      • And He certainly is our healer, by His stripes we are healed.
    • So often when we think of Jesus we think of the weak, frail, bruised, bloody, dying body of Christ hung up on a Cross.
      • And He certainly loved us enough to die for us.
      • But Jesus did not stay on that Cross… He did not stay in that Grave.
        • They mocked Jesus and said “Call down an army of Angels to save you”.
        • And it wasn’t that Jesus said “No” it was that Jesus said “Not yet”
          • Because that army of angels and saints is coming!
  • See we often think of the Lamb who was slain, and we do well in doing so… But we do not often enough think of the LION who roars!
  • Because when Jesus comes back, He is not coming back as the Lamb, HE IS COMING BACK AS THE LION! LET THE LION ROAR!

Point One – Love is Jealous

Revelation 19:15-16 ESV  From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.  (16)  On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.

  • The first thing I want you to take away from today’s message is that Love is Jealous.
  • Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
    • That means that all Kings, every ruler, every politician is rightfully under His authority, under His Kingship, under His throne.
      • But we know that not all Kings bow down to Jesus.
      • Not all lords honor Jesus.
      • In fact MOST kings, presidents, politicians… whatever… most of them live in open rebellion to Christ, rejecting Him and choosing to serve Satan instead.
    • And because of that, the Jealousy of Christ comes fourth.

Exodus 20:5 ESV  You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,

Exodus 34:14 ESV  (for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),

Deuteronomy 6:15 ESV  for the LORD your God in your midst is a jealous God—lest the anger of the LORD your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.

Deuteronomy 4:24 ESV  For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

  • I never want to hear anyone in this church say that Jealousy is a sin.
    • THAT IS BLASPHAMEY!
    • Envy is a sin.
    • Covetousness is a sin.
    • But Jealousy is an attribute of God.
      • God is a Jealous God.
      • Love is Jealous!
  • Now at this point you may be thinking “Now I know that Envy is a sin and I know that Covetousness is a sin… what’s the difference?”
    • I am glad you asked… here are the definitions of these three words:
  • Covetoushaving or showing a great desire to possess something belonging to someone else
    • Envious
      • a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else’s possessions, qualities, or luck
    • Jealous
      • to be fiercely protective or vigilant of one’s own rights or possessions
  • You see envy and covetousness both have to do with OTHER PEOPLES things.
    • I want HIS car.
    • I want HER body.
    • I want HIS wife.
    • I want HER husband.
    • I want THEIR house.
    • I wish I had their family instead of my own.
  • These feelings of wanting other peoples things are sinful, they show a lack of contentment and we are commanded to be content in Christ Jeus.
  • But Jealousy is different, it is all about your own stuff. It is saying “This is mine and I don’t want to share”.
    • This is MY wife, no I will not share her with you.
    • These are MY children, no you can not have them.
    • This is MY home, no you can not profane it.
      • Church it is ok to not want your wife to sleep with other men.
      • It is ok to not want you husband to sleep with other women.
      • It is ok to not want you children to be raised by the world.
      • It is ok to not want you home to be filled with demons.
        • You see this is jealousy. And it’s a good thing sometimes.
          • Now sometimes it can be sinful… to be selfish and greedy over your time, your money, or your possessions… that is sinful.
        • But when it comes to your family, and your life… Be jealous.
  • God is jealous! Love is Jealous!
    • God doesn’t want to share you with Satan.
    • Jesus doesn’t want to share you with Lucifer.
      • You see we are the bride of Christ… and we need to stop steeping out on Jesus.
      • We need to stop cheating on Christ with sin!
        • We need to stop fooling around with wicked movies, TV shows, music, politicians, cell phone apps… whatever.
        • We need to stop splitting our time between Jesus and our mistress we call the WORLD.
      • BECAUSE LOVE IS JEALOUS!
        • Love died on the Cross for us, He paid a HIGH price…
          • HE DOESN’T WANT TO SHARE US AFTER THAT.
          • Love want’s us ALL TO HIMSELF. And so He should, He is our Groom and we are His bride!
  • God has literally done EVERYTHING to separate us from our old master… so it makes sense that He would be jealous of us… and it is for our own good too!
    • It’s not like it harms us, it is the BEST thing ever to stay with God and never return to the world or to the ways of the flesh or Satan.
    • Staying with Jesus means a life of love, blessings, grace, forgiveness, hope, and peace.
      • Cheating on Jesus means destruction, pain, suffering, and hopelessness.
  • So yes, God is a Jealous God, and that is a good thing for us.
    • Because Love is jealous and God is Love.
  • And frankly, some of you men, and I am going to speak to the men because the Bible calls you the head of the household… some of you men say you love your wife and children but you are not NEARLY jealous enough of them.
    • Don’t share your wife with romance novels or filthy TV shows.
    • Don’t share your children with wicked school districts.
      • Your kids have to go to public school? Fine! Then go and fight like the man that you are to make sure that they are not teaching your kids secular filth.
    • Men, take ownership of your house and your family, be Jealous of them! Don’t share them with the enemy or the world!

1 Corinthians 16:13 ESV  Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.

Now that brings me to point two… Jealousy Demands Wrath.

Point Two – Jealousy Demands Wrath

Revelation 19:11-15 ESV  Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse!

  • Jesus is coming back church! And He is coming back with WRATH!
    • Love is a VEHEMONT flame.
    • Love is a Jealous and unquenchable fire… and it BURNS UP those who oppose it!

On Friday, March 16, 1984, a man named Jeff Doucet was flown back from California to Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport to face trial. Doucet arrived and was led in handcuffs by police officers through the airport at around 9:30 p.m., where another man, Jeff Plauche, was waiting for him with a gun.

Jeff was friends with several high-ranking police officers in the Baton Rouge Police Department; while many people believed that these contacts told Plauche where and when Doucet would be arriving, it was actually an employee of the TV news station WBRZ-TV who gave Jeff the information. A news television crew was also waiting for Doucet and had set up their cameras to record his arrival. Opposite the news crew was a bank of pay telephones, where Jeff waited while talking to his best friend on a telephone. He wore a baseball cap and sunglasses, so no one recognized him.

As Doucet was escorted through the airport, he passed the television crew who were taping the scene. He then walked past Jeff, who took out his gun and fired a single shot, directly at the right side of Doucet’s head, at point-blank range. Doucet immediately fell to the floor, and Plauche placed the gun down before officers restrained him. Doucet died from the gunshot wound to his head. The entire incident was captured on live TV.

This was a shocking killing, preformed on live TV. It was all captured for the nation to see. But Jeff Doucet did not serve a single day in prison for his crime. Instead He was given 5 years probation and 300 hours of community service.

  • Why was Jeff Plauche given such a light sentence?
    • He had just killed a defenseless man on live TV?
    • How could he be given what really is paramount to just a slap on the wrist?
  • Well that is because EVEN THE WORLD understands that Love is Jealous and that Jealousy demands wrath.
    • You see the man Jeff killed had been sexual molesting his son… and when that came out he kidnapped Jeff’s son to continue the molestation.
    • JEFF WAS JEALOUS OF HIS SON. AND THAT JEALOSY, WHEN FACED WITH SUCH EVIL, DEMANDS WRATH.
  • Love is Jealous and Jealousy demands wrath.
  • I tell you the truth when I say that I love you enough I would die for you…
    • But if I walked into my bedroom and found you raping my wife, you better believe I am going to beat you to half an inch of your life.
    • I might shoot you a few times for good measure too.
    • Afterwards, I will pray for you, I will call you an ambulance, I will give you CPR and preach the Gospel to you… but I am jealous of my wife and I will pour out wrath if that jealousy is questioned.
      • And what would the pacifist do, I wonder, if he walked in on his wife being violently raped?
        • Would he try to talk it out.
        • Would he just allow it to happen?
        • Would he say “I don’t want to offend the rapist?”
        • NOW! Even the most devout pacifist in the world, if he loved his wife, would violently remove the rapist.
  • Tell me church, would it be loving to sit back and watch your bride be rapped?
    • Would it be loving to allow it to happen even though you could do something about it?
    • Would it be loving to watch as your wife cried out in pain begging for help?
      • NO! THAT WOULD BE THE HEIGHT OF WICKEDNESS.
  • AND THE WORLD HAS BEEN RAPING THE BRIDE OF CHRIST FOR FAR TO LONG.
  • AND JESUS HAS BEEN PATIENT, DESIRING ALL TO COME TO REPENTANCE, BUT HIS PATIENCE WILL RUN OUT!
    • JESUS IS COMING BACK! AND HE IS COMING BACK WITH WRATH.

  • Those kings that should have been bowing down to Him… He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords… those kings who are supposed to be under His kingship… but they have been cheating… they have been adulterous… they have betrayed their true king to serve another…
    • All those wicked politicians…
    • JESUS IS DONE WITH THAT.
      • Now it is time for the sword. Now it is time for the fire. Now it is time for the winepress of wrath.
  • Those nations, people that God created. People that God died for… they continue to get more and more wicked… running away from their father and serving the devil.
    • JESUS IS DONE WITH THAT.
      • Now it is time for the iron rod.
    • Jesus is the Lion and the Lamb. Yes the Lamb has suffered, but the LION HAS A ROAR!
  • They have been abusing, molesting, and raping the bride of Christ for far to long, and soon and very soon our husband is coming homing… AND IT IS GOING TO BE HELL TO PAY! Literally.
    • Because Jealousy DEMANDS WRATH.

Romans 1:18 ESV  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

Romans 2:4-5 ESV  Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?  (5)  But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

  • Listen, John 3:16 is one of the best known verses in the Bible…

John 3:16 KJV  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

  • But just 10 verses later, the wrath of God is addressed… why? Because Love is Jealous and Jealousy demands wrath!

John 3:36 ESV  Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Conclusion

  • Look, I want to conclude with this.
    • Church we need to get jealous.
      • Jealous of our families.
      • Jealous of our spouses.
      • Jealous of our city.
      • Jealous of our state.
      • Jealous of our nation.
      • Jealous of our church.
    • And just maybe, we might need a little more wrath too… a time is coming when we may have to take out a few whips and turn over a few tables.
    • Because love is jealous and jealousy demands wrath.
  • Gospel Call
