Introduction
Revelation 11:11-19 ESV But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. (12) Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here!” And they went up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies watched them. (13) And at that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven. (14) The second woe has passed; behold, the third woe is soon to come. (15) Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” (16) And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, (17) saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign. (18) The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.” (19) Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.
- So what we have here is the taking up of the two witnesses and then the sounding of the Seventh Trumpet.
- And it has been a while since we talked about seals and trumpets and what not, so let’s recap where we are in Revelation…
- John is being shown the things that will happen in the final days before the return of Christ.
- And the first major set of events happen as these seven seals on the scroll of the final days are open.
- And it has been a while since we talked about seals and trumpets and what not, so let’s recap where we are in Revelation…
Seal One: The White Horseman conquers. (Rise of the Anti-Christ)
Seal Two: The Red Horseman takes peace. (Global war)
Seal Three: The Black Horseman brings weighs food. (Global Famine)
Seal Four: The Pale/Green Horseman named Death followed by Hades. (Mass Deaths)
Seal Five: The Souls of the martyrs cry out to God.
Seal Six: Global calamity. (Natural disasters)
Seal Seven: Silence in Heaven followed by the outpouring of God’s judgment.
- Now these things happen in consecutive order… so the first solid sign that we are in the last days is that the anti-Christ will rise to power and take his seat in the rebuilt temple in Jerusalem. This is confirmed in a PLETHORA of scriptures both Old and New Testament.
- Go listen to the sermons on the First Horseman of the Apocalypse and on the Two Witnesses to get all of those scripture references…
- But for now, just know, no Temple, no Anti-Christ, no end of the world. I don’t want anyone to get all excited and think that I am suggesting that the end of the world is going to happen very soon, because the temple hasn’t been rebuilt yet… okay… good.
- After the Seven Seals comes the Seven trumpets… and we have covered these as well… each one of the Seven trumpets is a plague or calamity worse than that of the Seven Seals…
- Trumpet One: A third of trees and grass destroyed by fiery, bloody, hail.
- Trumpet Two: A third of the sea and the ships within destroyed.
- Trumpet Three: A third of fresh water turns poison.
- Trumpet Four: A third of the stars and sun darkened.
- Trumpet Five: Locust like demons torment mankind. (1st Woe)
- Trumpet Six: Angles of Death are released to kill a third of mankind. (2nd Woe)
- So these six trumpets leave the Earth devastated.
- Imagine the impact on horticulture with a third of the sun blotted out and a third of crops destroyed.
- The impact on shipping with a third of the ocean destroyed.
- The impact on global health with a third of fresh water destroyed.
- The impact on the world with a third of mankind being killed…
- The world is going to be in a very bad place at this point… but still, after all of this, people will not repent from their sins…
Revelation 9:20 ESV The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk,
- Do you see why we stand so strong against sin in this church… it’s because I love you! I love you so much that I don’t want you to be tormented. I don’t want you to suffer. I want you to have life and life more abundantly. I don’t want Revelation 9:20 to describe ANYONE in this church should the end come in our lifetime.
- Not to mention the countless blessings that are promised in Scripture if we would just live holy and righteous lives… if we would just live in right standing with God!
- But many of the world will not live that way, the refuse to live that way… and so we have the Seven Seals and the first Six Trumpets.
- Now before the Seventh trumpet is blown, God sends these two prophets, and it is likely that these prophets were warning the nations and urging them to repent…
- And that tormented the world who eventually killed them.
- But in the end they were taken up to heaven as their enemies watched… we will talk more about that at the end of todays message…
- But for the majority of todays message I want to talk about the Seventh Trumpet which is also called the Third Woe…. Lets read our key passage again…
Revelation 11:15-19 ESV Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” (16) And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, (17) saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.
BE ON THE WINNING TEAM! GOD WINS!
What we see in this Seventh Trumpet is God taking back control over the earth.
If you are an astute Bible student you may already know that at this current time, God is not the leader of the earth, but He has allowed Satan to rule over the earth.
(Put this on as few sides as makes legible sense. If you need to use multiple that’s ok.)
- Jesus referred to Satan as “the ruler of this world” three times (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11).
- Satan is called “the god of this world” (2 Cor 4:4)
- Satan is called “the prince of the power of the air” (Eph 2:2)
- Scripture informs us “that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one” (1 John 5:19).
- Satan rules as a tyrant who has “weakened the nations” (Isa 14:12),
Compiled By: ThinkingOnScripture.com
- We have talked about this fact before, way back in Luke when we talked about the Temptations of Christ.
- Satan offered Jesus the whole world if Jesus would just worship him… and Satan had the authority and power to make this offer because he is the ruler of this world. Of course, though, Jesus did not take the bait… He knew there is no shortcuts to God’s victory.
- So Satan is the Ruler of This World, currently… BUT GOD WINS! That’s what the Seventh Seal is all about… it is about God taking back the earth, taking back what is rightfully His… the Seventh Seal is all about God winning! And God’s people winning!
- But if that is the case, pastor, why is it called the 3rd woe?
- Good question! The same reason all the other seals and trumpets seem so horrible…
- It’s not that they are horrible to the Christian… we are signed sealed and delivered! We are not the subject of God’s wrath.
- No, these are not Woes for us… but they are Woes for the world.
- With the majority of the world living their lives in opposition to God, it is terrible thing for them when God comes and takes back over!
- Because now the very God they have been persecuting has taken over control, and that God is angry…
- There is a fantastic sermon about this by and old preacher named Johnathan Edwards, it is one of the most powerful sermons ever preached… it’s called “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”. I put it on my Facebook if you want to listen to it… I would strongly encourage it.
- Good question! The same reason all the other seals and trumpets seem so horrible…
- But if that is the case, pastor, why is it called the 3rd woe?
- Now, a couple of things about this final trumpet:
- I believe this trumpet, the final trumpet, is explained in the next few chapters… it likely covers chapters 12-14… meaning that the events that are covered in chapters 12-14 are the explanation of the Seventh trumpet.
- Second, if I had to pinpoint where the rapture takes place, I would say it happens during or at the end of this final trumpet.
1 Corinthians 15:51-52 ESV Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, (52) in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
- Further Jesus says the rapture will not happen until after the tribulation period is nearly over…
Matthew 24:29-31 ESV “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. (30) Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. (31) And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
-
- Finally, it is after this trumpet is finished being explained that we never see saints living on the fallen earth again, not until the Millennial reign of Christ.
- Up until the very end of this trumpet we see verses in Revelation talking about the persecution of Christians on earth… but after chapter 14 concludes we don’t see any reference to saints being persecuted on earth… but we do all the sudden see “great multitudes in heaven”.
- Now I am not 100% for SURE this is when the rapture takes place, but I think it is the safest theory based on the full testimony of Scripture.
- Up until the very end of this trumpet we see verses in Revelation talking about the persecution of Christians on earth… but after chapter 14 concludes we don’t see any reference to saints being persecuted on earth… but we do all the sudden see “great multitudes in heaven”.
- So, we have the final Trumpet… the end of the end. One final note… this is the point in future History where God takes back control of the earth, but that does not mean Satan is happy about it and will still try to mess with mankind and overthrow God… he just no longer does so as the ruler of the earth.
- Finally, it is after this trumpet is finished being explained that we never see saints living on the fallen earth again, not until the Millennial reign of Christ.
- Let us pray and then get into our two points this morning…
Point One – Everyone Will Be Judged
Revelation 11:16-18 ESV And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, (17) saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign. (18) The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.”
- Look at the begging of verse 18 one more time…
Revelation 11:18a ESV The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged…
- The fact that we will all be judged is a staple theme of Christianity… it is something that sets us apart from all other major religions…
- You don’t get a pass because you are a good person.
- You don’t get to skip judgment because you volunteer at your kids school, or because you give lots of money to charity, or even because you serve faithfully at your church.
- Most other religions say that Judgment is only for bad people.
- But Christianity says EVERYONE will be judged, because God is a just Judge.
Hebrews 9:27 ESV And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
- This concept is finalized in Revelation 20:12
Revelation 20:12 ESV And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.
- So again, point one this morning is that everyone will be Judged…
- Think of this Judgment like a court date… you have a date set in the heavenly court.
- The judge presiding over your case is God…
- The moment you die, or are raptured, God calls your name… you answer, “Yes Lord, I am here”.
- He says “Let me see if you have broken any of my laws” and He opens up a book and finds your name…
- Now the question is, what will He find written under your name? Will He find a list of sins… a list of every time you have broken one of God’s laws?
- Or will He find that, according to His book, you have never sinned…
- Because if He find’s just one sin written in that book… just one law broken… one lie told… one lustful thought… one petty theft… just one time you dishonored your parents… if He finds just one little sin written down there under your name…
- Then you must be punished in full accordance to the Law. Anything short of that would prove that God is not just. Because a JUST judge punishes all law breakers to the letter of the Law, He does not play favorites… He is not fickle and in a good mood one day and a bad mood the next.
- The book of Deuteronomy describes God thusly:
Deuteronomy 32:4 ESV “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.
- So then, we have an issue… because we have ALL sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
- God puts out these laws…
- Don’t lie
- Don’t lust
- Don’t blaspheme (use God’s name in vain).
- Don’t hate without cause
- Don’t covet
- And what do we do?
- We lie
- And we list
- And we blaspheme
- And we hate without cause
- And we covet
- God has so many laws and we break them over and over… sometimes we don’t even know we are breaking them… but we do.
- And this is a problem… because there are two groups of people on Judgment day… those who go into eternal life… IE heaven, and those who go into eternal punishment… IE Hell.
- God puts out these laws…
Matthew 25:46 ESV And these [sinners] will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
- And what you will find is that throughout the Bible there are really two teams of people waring against each other…
- The church, that is, God’s people who love and obey and follow God…
- And the world, that is, Satan’s people who hate God and disobey Him at nearly every turn.
- And what we see from the final trumpet is this: WE ARE ALL GOING TO BE JUDGED… BUT THOSE ONE TEAM JESUS ARE GOING TO WIN THE VICTORY!
Revelation 11:18 ESV The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.”
- So one team, the winning team, GOD’S team get’s judged and after their judgment, they get rewards!
- And the other team, the losing team, they get judged and they are destroyed eternally in hell.
- Which team do you want to be on?
- I WANT TO BE ON THE WINNING TEAM!
- And the other team, the losing team, they get judged and they are destroyed eternally in hell.
- “But how does that work pastor, you said if any sin is found under your name then you are doomed to hell…”
- And yes that is true… and that is one of the best parts of the Gospel!
Acts 3:19 ESV Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,
Isaiah 43:25 ESV “I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.
Psalms 103:12 ESV as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
- He blots out our sins… that means He erases them… back in the day there was no erasers, so when you made a mistake you blotted ink over the mistake, erasing it from being able to be read.
- That means when God looks over your name to see all the sins you have done, if you are a born again Christian, if you are on team Jesus…then God will see a bunch of ink blots… but not a single sin listed. They will all be erased…
- But you have to be on the winning team…
- The only hope that those in the world have is that somehow Satan will be able to overthrow God… that some how the forces of darkness will overcome the forces of light.
- But the end of the book is already written.
- BE ON THE WINNING TEAM.
- Because when Judgment day comes, you DON’T WANT TO BE ON THE LOSING TEAM.
- But there will be war between God and Satan… between good and evil… these two forces will war… we will get into that latter in Revelation… For now, know that God wins.
- Be on the winning team!
- And that brings us to point two… Expect the greater Reward.
- Be on the winning team!
Point Two – Expect The Greater Reward
Revelation 11:16-18 ESV And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, (17) saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign. (18) The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.”
- Did you catch what happens to the winning team? God takes back over the earth claiming Final and total victory and look what happens to those on team Jesus… for the saints, the servants, the prophets… that means ALL the born again…
Revelation 11:18 ESV The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.”
- The saints are REWARDED! That’s what verse 18 says. The time for the rewarding of God’s servants, prophets, saints, those who fear His name both small and great… THEIR TIME FOR REWARDS has come.
2 Corinthians 5:10 ESV For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
- So God wins, then comes the Judgment… and each person will receive either penalty or reward.
- If you are on Team Jesus… if your sins have been blotted out, if you are truly born again… THEN YOU SHOULD EXPECT REWARD!
- In Men’s Fraternity, our men’s group here at CLC (Which meets THIS Friday evening) we have a definition of manhood… RALE, it’s an acronym that differentiates boys from men… being male is easy, you are born that what, but being a man takes RALE… it goes like this:
A Man is a Male Who:
R – Rejects Passivity
A – Accepts Responsibility
L – Leads Courageously
E – Expects The Greater Reward
- Now some of these apply to women as well, but especially the E, the E applies to ALL Christians. A Mature Christian is one who expects the greater reward… what do I mean by that?
- I mean that we don’t focus on the temporary.
- We don’t focus on temporary pleasure… if we did we would fall into all kinds of sin, because the Bible says in Hebrews 11:25 that sin is pleasurable, but only for a short while.
- We don’t focus on temporary provision… chasing after money and things… because the Bible teaches us to trust God for provision. Yes we work as men, and provide for our families, that is a Biblical mandate, but we understand that God is our provider so we are never willing to use sin for financial gain.
- We don’t focus on temporary pain… somethings hurt, but there is a greater reward at the end… like working out, it’s not fun while you do it… at least not for me… but there is a greater reward… saving an emergency fund or saving for retirement… it hurts to put that money away when you could spend it on some new toy… but there is a greater reward at the end.
- So as Men, we Expect the Greater Reward.
- The example I always give is building my basement. When I bought my house the basement was unfinished.
- We decided to finish it, with a lot of help from my Father-In-Law and the Duchesneaus we finished it and nearly doubled the square footage of my house.
- But it was a lot of work… and it took a lot of time… and some of the work was SO monotonous! It took almost 6 months of working here and there to finish it…
- I remember complaining and having one of the men tell me MAN UP! “RALE”! You are not working on your basement because it is fun to work on the basement, you are working on your basement because YOU WANT TO HAVE A FINISHED BASEMENT. Stop focusing on the work and focus on the REWARD. EXPECT THE GREATER REWARD!
- How much more is this true for Christians? Do we live life expecting temporary reward or do we live life expecting the greater reward?
- Just consider how crazy the world is right now… inflation is up… jobs can’t find workers… healthcare decisions are no longer private… families are divided… Russia is on the brink of invading the Ukraine… Kazakhstan is in flames… Christians in Africa are being Martyred left and right… China is in the middle of an ethnic genocide… Social media is HUGE and censoring dissenting voices… churches are dying left and right… Christians are being kicked out of Academia… THINGS ARE CRAZY…
- But if you have been with us through this much of Revelation, you know they are going to get much, much, much worse… And look at what our key verses today say about the Nations response to God taking back over the world…
Revelation 11:15-18a ESV Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” (16) And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, (17) saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign. (18) The nations raged…
- THE NATIONS RAGED. Unless you lived through WW2 you probably have never experienced the Nations Raging.
- Imagine global war breaking out now… we already have supply shortages… we already have extreme social pressure to obey the government no matter what… imagine global war… how hard that is going to be… especially if it is us vs them… the Christians vs the World.
- Life will get harder… it will get crazier… there will be pressure to get the mark of the beast.
- You will be so tempted… because if I just get the mark, then things will be easier for me… I won’t lose my job, I won’t lose my family, I can go to church and to movies and to football games…
- But that is living life based on the TEMPORARY and not the eternal!
- And look, I don’t think the vaccines are the Mark of The Beast… not at all, but I am now understanding how easy it is to try to force society to comply with things they may not want to do.
- I have had many conversations with people “I don’t want the vaccine for XYZ but life will be SO MUCH easier if I just get it”.
- I think that is the same argument for getting the mark of the beast.
- And it’s a terrible reason to do anything!
- With the vaccine, as with everything else in life, you simply need to ask yourself “is this sin” and if your answer is anything other than “No I am sure this is not sin” then you should stay away from it.
- But if after prayer and study you can firmly say “I am sure this is not sin” then there is liberty! As Paul says “All things are permissible, but not all things are beneficial.”
- But we should never do anything just because it makes our temporary life easier… Because we are not living for today. We are not living for this temporary life… WE ARE EXPECTING A GREATER REWARD. No sin shortcut is going to help us get a better reward in heaven… to the contrary sin keeps us from God because God can’t, by nature, be around sin. God is Holy, He is separated from sin.
- Live life on TEAM JESUS. Because TEAM JESUS is the winning team. And the winners get a reward! EXPECT THE GREATER REWARD.
- Imagine global war breaking out now… we already have supply shortages… we already have extreme social pressure to obey the government no matter what… imagine global war… how hard that is going to be… especially if it is us vs them… the Christians vs the World.
James 1:12 ESV Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
Matthew 5:11-12 ESV “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. (12) Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Luke 12:32-34 ESV “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. (33) Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. (34) For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
- And this brings us back full circle to the two witnesses.
- When you chose to live for the greater reward… when you chose to live for Jesus…
- People are going to hate you, of course they are, they hate you because they hated Jesus first.
- People are going to try to silence you.
- They are going to try to stop you.
- They may even try to kill you.
- When you are on team Jesus you will have MANY enemies… enemies we are commanded to love… but enemies none the less…
- No one will know this better than the two witnesses, they were murdered… no… they were martyred by their enemies… the beast MADE war against them… their dead bodies lay in the street, the world rejoicing that they have been killed… Yet even so, the witnesses are on the winning team… even so the witnesses win…
- When you chose to live for the greater reward… when you chose to live for Jesus…
Revelation 11:11-12 ESV But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. (12) Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here!” And they went up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies watched them.
- Just like the witnesses, you too will be called up into heaven. By rapture or by death, you will be called up to a judgment seat… which team will you be on?
Conclusion
I want to conclude by recapping this seventh trumpet…
Revelation 11:15-19 ESV Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” (16) And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, (17) saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.
- This trumpet marks the period of time where God takes back over the earth, where He wars against Satan, wins, and cast him out… the next few chapters in revelation give us the details of how this all goes down, but they start with this foreshadowing… GOD WINS.
- Moreover these verses split up all of mankind into two groups… two teams… the Saints and the Destroyers.
- The Saints, they are rewarded… one day we will hear on Judgment day, as the Lord opens the books of life and death, and finds our name… and sees the blank space where our sins should be listed… He will look up, look us in the eye, and then we will hear “Well done my good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your master”
Matthew 25:23 ESV His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’
- That’s our reward, that’s the reward for Team Jesus… the saints, and prophets, and servents, and all who fear God… for every born again believer… we have an eternal reward waiting for us… because OUR TEAM WINS.
- But for the losing team… the team Revelation calls “The destroyers of the earth”… all those who have not been born again, they face eternal judgment… and eternity in hell.. 2nd Thessalonians puts it this way…
2 Thessalonians 1:7b-0 ESV …when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels (8) in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. (9) They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,
- Those who don’t know God and who did not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus… they will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction…
- I don’t want that for you… I don’t want that for anyone… do you know God? Do you really KNOW Him or do you just know about Him?
- Have you obeyed the Gospels?
- Have you been born again?
- If not, it’s time to change teams… you need to get on the winning team…
